On Teaching:
Early childhood development sets the foundation for life long learning, behavior and health. At Roots and Wings Daycare we prepare a homelike and enriching environment with materials that offer opportunities for exploration and discovery. We focus on all the aspects of your child's development:
* Partnerships with families and communities strengthen the ability to meet the needs of young children
*Learning is most meaningful when it occurs in the context of the child’s everyday life experiences at home and at Roots and Wings. We focus on cognitive, language, physical and emotional development as well as independence . Our environment is set up to include a rich variety of developmentally appropriate, accessible materials that encourage and promote learning through play.
*Play is an important vehicle for children’s development in all areas. Play capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity and exuberance.
*Development advances when children have opportunities to practice new skills as well as when they experience a challenge just beyond their present level of mastery.
*Children learn in different ways and express their knowledge in different ways.
*Children learn best in an environment where they feel safe and valued, their physical needs are met, and they feel psychologically secure.
*Children should be taught about the effects we have on the planet, and what we can do to help. We are concerned for our planet, and believe that developing good habits early promotes making earth friendly decisions an everyday part of life.
We have a passion for working with kids and want them to learn and grow in the most comfortable and fun environment possible while including the curriculum needed for the kids to be prepared for preschool.
On Discipline:
We use positive guidance techniques, which means, no shaming, time outs, humiliation or power struggles. We get down on their level and talk through our differences, guide them to understanding expectations and teaching them what the words we are saying mean. We use repetition, redirection, natural consequences, early intervention, but mostly- calm words of explanation.
Typical Meal:
A typical meal consists of fresh, unprocessed food. Two veggies or fruit, a protein and a carbohydrate. We use only whole grain breads and pasta and often puree veggies to "hide them" in things like pizza or pasta sauce. We do not serve juice, unrefined sugar, or anything with artificial colors.
On Toilet Training:
We help Potty Train when
1.)The child wants to use the potty 2.)The child can pull his or her pants down by themselves or with little help 3.) They seem very interested in the potty, reading books, watching other children as they come and go from the bathroom, expressing a real interest in it. We do not offer treats or stickers for potty success. We simply ask the child if they would like to use the potty. If they say no we never force it. If they say yes and try, we celebrate!
